Executive Summary The following case will analyze the Wal-Mart China’s Sustainability efforts. Wal-Mart China is in the begging stages of becoming sustainable, in an ecological sense, and faces some key issues. First the case will provide background information on Wal-Mart Global and Wal-Mart China to ensure the reader is aware of the circumstances. Then the case will analyze Wal-Mart China based on the 4Rs, recycling, resource, regulations, and reputation, described in Operations Management by Heizer, and how their efforts correlate with them. The case will then address key issues, such as questionable logistics practices, and price sensitive customers, and weary stakeholders. Background Information Wal-Mart Global Sam Walton†¦show more content†¦When China joined the sustainability movement they took the 14 sustainable value networks (SVNs) created by Wal-Mart U.S. and simplified it to 5 SVNs: sustainable stores amp; operations, sustainable products, supply chain compliance amp; standards, supply chain efficiencies, and communications. The 5 SVNs show correlation with the 4 Rs, recycling, resource, regulations, and reputation, described in the Operations Management, by Heizer. The 4 Rs are areas that management should consider when implementing the sustainability movement. Since, Wal-Mart China does not produce their own products they must also take into considerations the sustainability of their suppliers as well. While, Wal-Mart China is off to a great start with their sustainability efforts there are some key problems that could keep Wal-Mart China from reaching the sustainability of Wal-Mart Global. Wal-Mart China faces obstacles such as logistics, price sensitive customers, a nd weary stakeholders. Recycling Recycling is only a possibility if products are designed with the capability of being recyclable. Wal-Mart China’s SVN, sustainable products, focuses on integrating environmental friendly products into the stores instead of those that are not.
